Reducing Protracted Internal Displacement: a Snapshot of Successful Humanitarian-Development Initiatives (OCHA)

At the end of 2018, some 41.3 million people had been displaced within their countries because of conflict and violence. This number has more than doubled over the past 20 years, with few people finding lasting solutions for their situations

Several projects have tried to improve the situation of IDPs and support durable solutions, giving them access to better and more secure housing, jobs, education and improved relations with their non-displaced neighbours. This paper by UNOCHA reviews 12 such projects in Colombia, Haiti, Somalia, Sudan and Ukraine, identifying elements of good practice. It also draws lessons from three donor frameworks, which aim to improve humanitarian-development collaboration, including in situations of protracted displacement.
