Why is collaborative profiling useful? What type of data can it provide? What does it entail in terms of resources and time? And why is it necessary to engage a neutral Profiling Coordinator?

Questions such as these regularly come up in discussions with partners seeking to create an evidence-base to improve their response to forced displacement. Given the diversity of approaches that generate data, it is no wonder that ‘profiling’ could mean different things to different people.

This is what inspired JIPS to create the profiling crash course, based on our extensive experience working in protracted displacement situations. We hope that the videos, quizzes, and suggested tools and guidance can serve as an entry-point for field practitioners and decision-makers to better understand the concepts and processes, as well as how profiling can help their operation.

We keep talking about ‘profiling’ – but what is it all about?

The course is organised into five topics:

  • What is Profiling?
  • Profiling Process
  • Role of a Coordinator
  • Elements of Methodology
  • Mixed Methods

Each of these is comprised of a 5-minute video and a short quiz so you can check your knowledge. A list of suggested documents offers additional reading, as well as helpful templates and guidance, drawn from our JET platform.

Not sure profiling is right for your operation?

Does your operation lack (agreed upon) displacement data? Or are you planning a profiling exercise and need to get an understanding of the basics? Then the crash course comes in timely – let’s get started!
