JIPS Essential Toolkit (JET)

The JIPS Essential Toolkit (JET) is a collection of accessible and easy-to-use tools and guidance that steers JIPS’ partners and colleagues through a profiling exercise from start to finish. It breaks the process down into six phases, each entailing a series of smaller steps and key outputs.

What does the tool include?

Templates, guidance documents and checklists steer the user through each profiling phase. The templates can be adapted to different situations or simply used for inspiration. The guidance documents delve deeper into each topic, giving valuable tips and points to consider in different contexts, and breaking down the more challenging elements of a profiling exercise. The checklists help the user chart their progress through each phase. Each tool also comes with examples from recent profiling exercises and links to complementary resources our partners have developed.

While we believe that every profiling process needs to be adapted to each local context and displacement situation, the steps in the process are generally the same. The JET toolkit summarises them into six main phases, ranging from defining the information need to disseminating the findings and recommendations:

  • icon-jet-Initiating-profiling1) Initiating the profiling exercise
In this phase stakeholders review existing data and assess the need for a profiling exercise.
  • icon-jet-collaborative-process2) Establising the collaborative process
In this phase stakeholders come together as profiling partners working towards a common objective.
  • icon-jet-methodology3) Designing the methodology
In this phase profiling partners translate objectives into a concrete plan for data collection and analysis.
  • icon-jet--data-collection4) Implementing data collection
In this phase profiling partners oversee the various methods used to collect data in the field.
  • icon-jet-data-processing-analysing5) Processing and analysing the data
In this phase profiling partners turn raw data into information to be analysed and interpreted collaboratively.
  • icon-jet-validation-reporting6) Validation, reporting and dissemination
Profiling partners now endorse the results, agree on and disseminate policy and program recommendations.

How is it useful?

The JET’s resources and guidance are comprehensive and self-standing. They equip users to plan and conduct a profiling exercise even without JIPS’ support, and prepare them to overcome the challenges they may face in undertaking a collaborative process to establish a shared understanding of a displacement situation.
